Report: Luis Suarez to undergo surgery, major doubt for World Cup

Luis Suarez could be ruled out of the World Cup having suffered an injury to his knee in training, according to a report.

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is to undergo surgery following an injury sustained in training, according to a report.

The 27-year-old, who scored 31 times for Liverpool last season, is said to have damaged his knee and will go under the knife in order to rectify the problem.

Uruguayan journalist Martin Charquero claims that meniscus surgery is required to rectify the problem, meaning the forward will need between four and six weeks to fully recover, with the World Cup kicking off in just three weeks' time.

Spain striker Fernando Torres had identical surgery ahead of the 2010 World Cup, playing his first match seven weeks after the operation.

Los Charruas get their campaign underway against Costa Rica on June 14, while they face England five days later in the group stage.
