Peter Odemwingie: 'Saido Berahino is not fighting West Bromwich Albion'

Peter Odemwingie defends West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, claiming that the young forward is not embroiled in a battle against the club itself.

Former West Bromwich Albion striker Peter Odemwingie has leapt to the defence of Saido Berahino, claiming that the young forward is not embroiled in a battle against the club itself.

The 22-year-old, who had handed the Baggies a transfer request, saw a deadline day move to Tottenham Hotspur collapse, which caused him to announce that he would not play for the club again.

Similarly, Odemwingie was caught up in a stand-off between himself and West Brom, which famously saw him refused entry to Loftus Road to complete a deadline day transfer to Queens Park Rangers.

Odemwingie, who now plays for Stoke City, told BBC Sport: "There is a difference between playing for Jeremy Peace and playing for West Brom. The chairman comes and goes, the fans stay.

"It is not Berahino against West Brom, like it wasn't Peter Odemwingie against West Brom. I felt, at the time, I could not go any further with them."

Berahino has scored 19 goals in 72 appearances for the Baggies.
