Paul Clement: 'John Terry's move to Aston Villa is sensible'

Swansea City head coach Paul Clement says that he understands John Terry's reasons for joining Aston Villa over a move to a Premier League club.

Swansea City head coach Paul Clement has said that he is fully understanding of John Terry's decision to reject offers to remain in the Premier League.

On Monday, it was confirmed that the Chelsea legend had penned a one-year deal with Aston Villa after shunning offers from the likes of Swansea and Bournemouth.

Terry's decision to drop down into the second tier has received a mixed reception, but Clement is supportive of the 36-year-old's decision, despite it leading to him missing out on his signature.

The 45-year-old told talkSPORT: "John is someone I know very well and have a lot respect for and have a good relationship with. Having known him since he was 16 years old and worked with him as well in the later years when I was an assistant at Chelsea, I understand very well his situation.

"He has made a sensible choice. Aston Villa are a very good club, they have got a good manager, they have got a nice infrastructure there.

"I think he is getting that balance between wanting to continue to play at a good level but at the same time not wanting to pull at his heartstrings really because it was difficult for him leaving Chelsea."

Clement has only made one signing this summer, with goalkeeper Erwin Mulder arriving on a free transfer.
