Bayern Munich fall to shock Rostov defeat in Russia

Rostov battle from a goal behind to beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in Russia, earning their first ever victory in the Champions League proper.

Rostov have picked up their first ever victory in the Champions League courtesy of a shock 3-2 triumph over Bayern Munich at the Stadion Olimp-2.

The Russian outfit had earned just one point from their previous four games in their debut campaign at this level, but they recovered from a goal down to pick up a famous win.

Douglas Costa blasted away the first shot of an entertaining match, which ended right down the throat of Soslan Dzhanayev in the Rostov goal.

Dzhanayev was called upon again soon after, this time to keep out Holger Badstuber as a much-changed visiting side went in search of a breakthrough goal in the cold climate.

Bayern were largely being restricted to efforts from range, despite their dominance on possession, but Costa did have the ball in the net 35 minutes in when curling a loose ball into the far corner.

The hosts had looked lively on the counter up until that point, and they did not have to wait long to level things up as Sardar Azmoun sent Jerome Boateng to ground and picked out the net.

Less than five minutes into the second half the game was turned on its head, with Christian Noboa being brought down inside the box and Dmitry Poloz in turn sending the keeper the wrong way to make it 2-1.

Rostov struggled to hold on and were pegged back by Juan Bernat, who got on the end of a Franck Ribery pass to ensure that his side still had a fighting chance of finishing top of the group, but the scoring did not finish there as Noboa sent a free kick over the wall to once again punish a slack Bayern side.

Thiago Alcantara and Thomas Muller both came close to rescuing a point for Bayern in the remaining minutes, though they failed to find a way through meaning a likely second-place finish in Group D for Carlo Ancelotti's out-of-sorts side, with Atletico Madrid now requiring just a point at home to PSV Eindhoven later this evening.
