Ruud Gullit: 'Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho needs a plan B'

Former Chelsea captain Ruud Gullit believes that Jose Mourinho's side needs to establish a plan B following their 2-1 defeat away at Newcastle United.

Ruud Gullit has criticised the Chelsea's performance in losing their unbeaten start to the season courtesy of a 2-1 defeat away at Newcastle United.

Papiss Cisse bagged a brace at St James' Park on Saturday, and despite Didier Drogba's goal seven minutes from time, the 10-man Magpies managed to see the game out and secure all three points.

Former Blues captain and manager Gullit has claimed that Jose Mourinho needs to discover an alternative plan should they find themselves being frustrated by defensive tactics away from home in the future.

He told BBC Sport: "The problem for Chelsea is that they are going to face more teams like this away from home. They have already faced Sunderland and only managed a draw so the question is what are you going to do against it?

"If Chelsea play with so many players through the middle and it doesn't end up working then you have to have a plan B.

"When Didier Drogba came on it changed their formation because they had two players up front, Drogba and Diego Costa but it just didn't seem to work for them. Jose Mourinho did change things eventually but it was too late."

Chelsea's lead at the top of the Premier League table has been cut to three points following Manchester City's 1-0 win against Everton.
