Dwight Gayle guides Crystal Palace comeback against Stoke City

Dwight Gayle scores twice as Crystal Palace come from behind to beat Stoke City at Selhurst Park.

Dwight Gayle scored twice to secure a 2-1 comeback victory for Crystal Palace over Stoke City at Selhurst Park this afternoon.

The result has officially confirmed that that Eagles will play Premier League football for another season.

Charlie Adam gave the Potters the lead before the half-hour mark, but Gayle led the fightback as he netted in the 47th and 68th minutes to claim all three points for Palace.

Joel Ward came close to opening the scoring for the hosts when his solo run ended in a shot, but Jakob Haugaard managed to make a stop in the middle of the goal.

The breakthrough came in the 26th minute when Adam struck first time from inside the box to hammer the ball into the back of the net, evading the goalkeeper.

Palace could not respond before the half-time interval, but it took just two minutes after the restart for the hosts to get back on level terms.

Gayle was quick to a loose ball inside the penalty area and drilled a shot into the bottom right corner to put his side back into the game.

Connor Wickham almost gave Palace the lead when he let a shot fly from the edge of the box, but his attempt flew over the crossbar.

The winner came with just over 20 minutes to play when Gayle found the back of the net from a free kick, and a few minutes later, the forward had an opportunity to double his tally.

Gayle tried a shot on the volley, but Stoke defended the area and made a crucial block to deny the 25-year-old's attempt.

Palace ended the game on the front foot and could have had three goals when Jordon Mutch struck from the edge of the box, but the ball drifted over the bar.

Palace are 14th in the league table on 42 points, while Stoke sit 10th in the standings - both have just one game left to play.
