England Under-21s edge closer to Euro 2019 with victory over Ukraine Under-21s

England Under-21s have moved five points clear at the top of their Euro 2019 qualifying group thanks to a 2-1 victory over Ukraine at Bramall Lane.

Aidy Boothroyd's charges took the lead on 41 minutes when James Maddison's cushioned pass split the away defence for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to slot past Andriy Lunin.

Ukraine enjoyed several gilt-edged opportunities and came close to drawing level just after the hour but for a goalline clearance from Jonjoe Kenny.

Maksym Lunyov found himself clear at the far post, took a touch and rifled an effort towards goal which beat goalkeeper Angus Gunn, but the Everton full-back managed to head clear.

However, the visitors did succeed in equalising seven minutes from time through substitute Mykola Shaparenko, who ghosted in unmarked through the England defence to head home the equaliser.

Nonetheless, England managed to strike back at the death, Ben Chilwell playing a pinpoint cross into the path of Dominic Solanke, who steered his header into the far corner of the net.

The Young Lions have now gone 31 unbeaten home or away in a qualifying or playoff games, dating back to November 2011, and are five points clear of second-placed Netherlands in Group 4.
