Roy Hodgson: 'England can have a very good World Cup'

England manager Roy Hodgson insists that his side can have a "very good World Cup" if they perform to the best of their abilities.

England manager Roy Hodgson has insisted that his side could have a "very good World Cup" if they perform as well as they are capable of doing.

The Three Lions go into this summer's tournament with relatively little expectation on their shoulders having been drawn alongside the likes of Italy and Uruguay in the group stages.

However, Hodgson refused to set a marker for what would constitute a successful campaign, instead stressing that his side would focus on each game as it comes.

"We're trying to focus hard on what it is possible for us to do, what we can do well and not get too hung up on the outcome," Hodgson told reporters.

"We are taking a simple approach. If we play well then we think our players, if they play to the best of their abilities, and we get some luck, which everyone needs, then we can have a very good World Cup.

"We will focus on the things we can control. Who knows if we will have a good World Cup or bad one? But we will make sure we take every measure possible to help us have a good World Cup."

England face Ecuador and Honduras in World Cup warm-up matches this week before their first game of the tournament itself against Italy on June 14.
