Liverpool's night got off to the worst possible start when Zenit scored an away goal through Hulk with 20 minutes on the clock.

The Brazilian striker latched onto a botched back-pass from Jamie Carragher before calmly slotting past Pepe Reina.

However, Liverpool were level soon after through Luis Suarez's powerful free kick and they were ahead at half time when Joe Allen converted Jose Enrique's cross at the second time of asking on 43 minutes.

The Merseysiders' comeback was given a boost on the hour as Suarez scored his second free kick of the night with a curled effort past Vyacheslav Malafeev from 25 yards.

Liverpool cranked up the pressure with 20 minutes left to play, with Malafeev denying Suarez and Steven Gerrard.

Meanwhile, Hulk was kept out at the other end by Reina as the game grew more stretched.

The home side pushed desperately in the final 10 minutes for the goal that would have seen them through to the next round, but Zenit stood firm to progress.
