Barnsley have signed teenage winger Dominic McHale from Manchester City.
The 17-year-old, who had his contract terminated by City last month, has been training with the Tykes' Under-18s and impressed enough to earn an 18-month contract.
"He's a player that the youth coaches have identified and I think the club has backed them and their judgement," Barnsley manager Danny Wilson told the club website.
"He's coming from a terrific background in Manchester City and let's hope we can make the most of the learning curve he has already been on there.
"It's important to keep an eye on the future as well as the present and be able to look forward."
Barnsley are currently 23rd in the Championship, five points adrift of safety.
