Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that the FA disciplinary system needs a "revamp" following the 10-match ban issued to Luis Suarez.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed his bemusement at Liverpool striker Luis Suarez being handed a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

The Uruguay international was hit with the lengthy ban by the Football Association for the incident, which occurred in the second half of Liverpool's 2-2 draw with the Blues on Sunday.

The 10-match ban is two games more than the eight-match suspension the 26-year-old suffered for racially abusing United defender Patrice Evra last season.

Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "I honestly think we need to revamp the punishment system we have in place in our game. Doesn't make sense at all."

Liverpool, who expressed their 'shock and disappointment' following the FA's ruling, will go through the written reasons today before deciding whether to appeal the ban by midday on Friday.
