Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has claimed that he 'does not know why' Jose Mourinho decided against selecting him in the early stages of the 2016-17 campaign.

Darmian has benefited from Antonio Valencia's recent injury to start Man United's last three matches, but the Italian is expected to drop out once again when Valencia returns to fitness.

While on international duty with Italy, the full-back was asked by Rai Sport why he had struggled for first-team football this season, and the international footballer could not explain Mourinho's decision.

"I don't know why, that's a difficult question to answer," said Darmian. "The coach has to make his decisions and we players have to accept them. I always worked hard and gave my best when called upon and I'll continue to do that.

"I certainly don't lack determination and that is fundamental, especially during a period where you don't play as much. From the first day I have put myself at the disposal of the team and tried to prove myself to the coach."

Darmian was signed by Louis van Gaal from Torino in the summer of 2015.
