Liverpool break a Premier League shot record in their two league fixtures with Manchester United during the 2023-24 campaign.

Liverpool have broken an incredible Premier League shot record in their two league fixtures with Manchester United this season but have been unable to win either contest.

Jurgen Klopp's side were held to a goalless draw by Man United at Anfield in England's top flight back in December, before the two teams played out a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Luis Diaz sent Liverpool ahead in the 23rd minute of Sunday's game, before Man United turned the match around to lead 2-1 in the second period, with Bruno Fernandes and then Kobbie Mainoo on the scoresheet.

However, Mohamed Salah scored an 83rd-minute penalty in Manchester, as the points were shared.

Liverpool have managed 62 shots in their two Premier League games against Man United this season, with 34 of those coming at Anfield and 28 at Old Trafford.

No team has had more against a single opponent in a campaign on record - from 2003-04 - but Liverpool were forced to settle for a point in their two league fixtures with Man United this term.

Liverpool were unable to return to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday, with the Reds instead sitting second, behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference.

The Merseyside outfit's head coach Klopp insisted that his side "should have won the game" against Man United, but the German accepted the point at Old Trafford.

"We should have won the game, that is clear. We should have had other goals in the first half already. No shots in the first half and 1-0 is the lowest we could expect," he told Sky Sports News.

"Really well done from Bruno. Then the stadium is coming and we needed a few minutes to settle again and they scored another screamer. We had big chances before and after they scored.

Liverpool's title hopes take a minor hit

"As far as I'm concerned, we have a point more than we did before. They put an extra shift in, that's how it is. We will face that again against Everton. Fully deserved equaliser.

"I think the Dominik Szoboszlai chance was an incredible save from [Andre] Onana. The other ones, we were in a bit of a rush, I would have loved us to take an extra touch.

"We have to be calm in the whole journey. The goals we scored brought us to where we are right now. We have Europa League on Thursday and then it's Crystal Palace. Games are coming thick and fast, that is good for us. I'm not over the moon but it's OK.

"I'm not angry at all with the boys but in the game I'm not just going to let things happen. We dropped too deep. There were plenty of situations where we could have defended the ball. You need to be proactive.

"We play now at home against Atalanta [BC], difficult game but at home and then another. We don't have many home games left. The team who wins the league in the end should deserve it. We are in the race and I'm absolutely fine with it."

Liverpool will welcome Atalanta to Anfield for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday before hosting Crystal Palace in the league next Sunday.
