Michael Carrick has said that it "hurts" to not be in England's 23-man squad for next month's World Cup in Brazil.
The Manchester United midfielder has been named on the seven-man standby list by national manager Roy Hodgson, who went for Chelsea's Frank Lampard in one of the final midfield spots.
"Disappointed to be left out of the squad," Carrick tweeted after the announcement.
"World Cups are special and to miss out hurts. Want to wish the boys the very best of luck."
Carrick was part of the England squad for the last two World Cups in Germany and South Africa respectively.
