Alessandro Del Piero is hoping to improve the popularity of football in Australia following his move to Sydney FC.

Alessandro Del Piero has claimed that he will help to improve the A-League following his move to Sydney FC.

The Italian striker ended his 19-year association with Juventus by joining Sydney on a free transfer earlier this month and hopes that the deal can promote football in Australia.

Del Piero said: "It was [an easy decision] because the project here is interesting. First of all I am here for Sydney, but then we hope the A-League will grow day by day.

"In everybody's blood there is football and we hope to wake up that."

The 37-year-old reportedly rejected an offer from Southampton before making the decision to become a Sydney player.
