Alexander MacDonald secures dramatic Burton Albion win

Alexander MacDonald's late free kick helps Burton Albion beat Northampton Town in their League Two clash.

Burton Albion have maintained their push at the top of the League Two table after Alexander MacDonald's late winner helped them beat Northampton Town 2-1 this afternoon.

Chances were few and far between in the match's opening exchanges, with both sides simply looking to take control of the game.

Northampton got their first shot away after good work from Kaid Mohamed saw his low effort blocked by Burton keeper Jon McLaughlin.

Chris Hackett and Ivan Toney then peppered the away side's goal with a flurry of shots, but the visitors stood firm.

The Cobblers profligacy continued as Mohamed blazed over when faced with an open goal to waste an excellent opportunity to put his side in front.

Burton punished them through Jacob Blyth, who slotted home after being slipped in by Robbie Weir.

After the break, Blyth and Matt Palmer combined to cross for Adam McGurk, who headed over.

A terrific save from Jordan Archer then denied Alex MacDonald as Burton looked to extend their advantage.

It looked like Burton would rue their missed chances after Daniel Alfei's ball fell invitingly to Ryan Cresswell inside the box late on.

The Northampton defender thumped home to level the scores, but MacDonald secured a dramatic victory for the visitors five minutes later when he rifled a free kick into the top corner from 30 yards.
