Gary Caldwell: 'I'll bring my own management style to Wigan Athletic'

New Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell insists that he will bring his 'own ideas and own style' to the role after being appointed following Malky Mackay's dismissal.

Gary Caldwell has insisted that he will implement his own 'ideas and style' to the Wigan Athletic team following his appointment as manager.

The club's former defender was handed the role just one day after Malky Mackay was sacked following a spell that lasted less than five months.

During his first press conference as Wigan boss, Caldwell claimed that he will take tips from managers that he has worked under, but will also put his own stamp on the team, while also focusing on the Latics youth system.

"I've worked with a number of top class managers - I'll look to take different bits of knowledge from each of them, but I'm not going to try to be them as I need to bring across my own ideas and my own style," Caldwell told reporters.

"I've worked a lot with the academy this season, it's an ongoing process and one that has been successful on the field this season. It will take time, but eventually we want to make sure we have academy players coming through.

"I want this club to do well, I've been here for five-and-a-half years and the club means so much to me. I'm officially retired now, I haven't been training recently and I've been focused on my coaching for a while now."

Wigan are eight points from safety in the Championship.
