Everton release a statement claiming that reports of an agreement to bring Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez to Goodison Park are "somewhat premature".

Everton have issued a statement claiming that reports of an agreement to bring Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez to Goodison Park are "somewhat premature".

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said on Monday evening that a compensation package had been finalised with the Toffees, who are in the process of replacing recently-installed Manchester United boss David Moyes.

However, the Merseyside club have since been keen to stress that, although an appointment is imminent, nothing has yet been fully agreed.

"In response to regrettable and somewhat premature reports earlier this evening, Everton Football Club are continuing discussions with regards to the vacant managerial position," read a statement released on the club's official website.

"Whilst positive moves are being made, the club will officially announce details as and only when they are agreed and completed."

Martinez was understood to have been on a three-man shortlist for the Everton manager's job, alongside Ralf Rangnick and Vitor Pereira.
