Wolfsburg see off Gent to reach Champions League quarter-finals

Wolfsburg advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Gent.

Wolfsburg have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time thanks to a 4-2 aggregate victory over Gent.

Having won 3-2 away in Belgium in the first leg last month, Wolfsburg were happy to sit back and invite pressure from Gent, who needed at least two goals, throughout the match tonight.

Both sides had half-chances in the early stages before Wolfsburg's Josua Guilavogui had the first shot on target with a rasping drive that Matz Sels beat away.

Gent's most dangerous player in the opening period was Moses Simon and he also threatened with a long-ranger that warmed the palms of Koen Casteels.

That was as good as it got for either side in the first half, with Wolfsburg starting to dominate the ball more and more upon the resumption.

Danijel Milicevic headed over a rare chance for the visitors before the deadlock was finally broken in the 74th minute.

Julian Draxler, scorer of two goals in the first leg, was the creator, beating his man down the right-hand side before crossing for Andre Schurrle to slot home.

It could have been more by the full-time whistle, but Max Kruse, Christian Trasch and Vieirinha all failed to beat Sels.

Wolfsburg will find out their last-eight opponents when the draw is made on March 18.
