Mikel Arteta has claimed that Arsenal are on the fast track back to the big time after thumping Manchester City 3-0 in Sunday's Community Shield clash at Wembley.
Goals from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud helped the Gunners humble the Premier League champions to seal their second piece of silverware since May.
Arsene Wenger's side ended a nine-year trophy drought by winning the FA Cup last season, and Arteta says that their Community Shield scalp is yet another step in the right direction.
"We want to progress from what we did last season. It was a long spell without trophies, we put it right last season but it's not enough for this club," he told Sky Sports News.
"I think we have to aim for bigger things and hopefully starting the season like this will help to boost the confidence, the belief, and I think we are heading in the right direction."
The North London giants open their Premier League campaign on Saturday by hosting Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium.
