Championship roundup: Sunderland brought crashing back down to earth

Sunderland are brought crashing back down to earth in the Championship courtesy of a 3-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Sunderland have been brought crashing back down to earth in the Championship courtesy of a 3-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday afternoon.

The Black Cats had given their survival hopes a huge lift with a 4-1 win at Derby County on Friday night, but Chris Coleman's side failed to build on the success at Pride Park.

Sunderland were bottom of the Championship table for long stages of the afternoon, but fellow strugglers Burton Albion ultimately remained in 24th on goal difference after they conceded late to draw 1-1 with Middlesbrough.

The point was enough for Boro to stay in sixth position in the table with fellow playoff hopefuls Bristol City, who stay seventh, suffering a damaging 1-0 home defeat to Brentford.

Millwall started the afternoon knowing that another win would move them into the top six, but Neil Harris's side passed up a host of late opportunities to draw 2-2 at Ipswich Town.

Queens Park Rangers were the big winners on the afternoon, meanwhile, as a strong performance helped them to a 4-1 success over Norwich City at Loftus Road, with the two teams staying 15th and 14th respectively in the second tier.

Results in full: Bristol City 0-1 Brentford, Burton Albion 1-1 Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town 2-2 Millwall, Queens Park Rangers 4-1 Norwich City, Sunderland 1-3 Sheffield Wednesday
