Michael Appleton is under pressure to turn around Charlton's fortunes after seeing his team draw four and lose five of their previous nine league matches.
Four of those defeats have taken place in their last five outings in the third tier, including a disappointing 2-0 loss in Saturday's away clash with Burton Albion.
As a result of their poor run of form, the Addicks currently sit in 17th place and seven points above the bottom three.
Appleton will know that his side need to improve defensively if they are to move up the table, having conceded 41 goals in 27 league matches – only three teams have let in more.
Despite experiencing a poor run of form, Charlton can take comfort from the fact that they have won each of their last four head-to-head meetings with Northampton.
While the Addicks are in the bottom half of the League One table, Northampton head into Tuesday's contest in 10th place and 37 points to their name, which represents a successful campaign for a side that won promotion from the fourth tier last season.
After falling to a 3-0 defeat to Stevenage on Boxing Day, the Cobblers went on to claim consecutive victories over Lincoln City and Cheltenham Town, before they played out a 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.
Having guided the club into the top half of the table, Northampton boss Jon Brady has been rewarded with a new rolling contract on improved terms.
The 49-year-old has had a free weekend to celebrate the news after Saturday's away clash with Oxford United was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
Brady will now be preparing for Tuesday's road trip, with his team looking to claim consecutive away league victories for the first time this season.

The hosts are unable to call upon Panutche Camara, Miles Leaburn and Chuks Aneke due to hamstring problems.
Conor McGrandles is set to miss out due to a calf issue, while Tuesday's contest may come too soon for Terry Taylor.
January signing Macaulay Gillesphey could be presented with his first start for the club after he came off the bench to make his Charlton debut on Saturday.
As for the visitors, they could be without Jack Sowerby, Sam Sherring, Akin Odimayo, Ali Koiki, Ben Fox, Tyler Magloire and Danny Hylton.
Louis Moulden and Tony Springett are expected to be on the bench after joining on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City respectively.
Sam Hoskins will continue to provide one of Northampton's main goal threats, having scored 13 times in 24 league games this season.
Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Maynard-Brewer; Ness, Jones, Gillesphey; T. Watson, Dobson, Coventry, Bakinson, Edun; May, Ladapo
Northampton Town possible starting lineup:
Burge; McGowan, Willis, Guthrie, Brough; McWilliams, Leonard; Bowie, Pinnock, Hoskins; Simpson
We say: Charlton Athletic 2-2 Northampton Town
Charlton will be desperate to end their long wait for a win, but we think that the Addicks may have to settle for a point against a Northampton side that has lost just one of their last seven league matches.
