New Liverpool signing Fabinho is confident that his side can challenge champions Manchester City in the Premier League title race during the upcoming campaign.

New Liverpool signing Fabinho has backed his side to challenge for the Premier League title during the upcoming campaign.

The Reds only managed a fourth-place finish in the top flight last season, but made it all the way to the Champions League final and drew plaudits for their attacking style of football.

Jurgen Klopp has significantly added to his squad this summer by bringing in Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker in addition to Fabinho, and the Brazil international is confident that the team can challenge reigning champions Manchester City.

"We have a very good team and we will be able to fight for the title. I have just started with my teammates and I understand we have excellent players. We have an excellent manager and a very good group. I understand City are the champions and produced excellent football last season, but we will do our best to get the title from them and make everyone here happy," Fabinho is quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

"When I became aware of Liverpool's interest I was very excited. I tried to focus on the end of the season with Monaco, but when you are aware a club of Liverpool's dimension is interested in your services, obviously it touches you. I tried to play my best for my team, trying to come second in the French league, but obviously you think about it.

"I watched and followed Liverpool last season because the way they played was very exciting – their quick transitions, the counter-attacking, the way they played from the defence to the opposition net, it was fantastic to watch. We have to carry on that way this season."

Liverpool have won the English top-flight title 18 times in the past, but the most recent of those came in 1990.
