Martin Keown: 'Christian Benteke has plenty to prove at Liverpool'

Martin Keown insists that Christian Benteke will prove to be a "very good signing" for Liverpool as long as the service to him improves as the season goes on.

Former England international Martin Keown has claimed that Christian Benteke "has a lot to prove" at Liverpool this season.

The 24-year-old has scored one goal in four appearances since joining the Reds for a fee of £32.5m during the summer transfer window.

Keown believes that the Belgian needs to do more to justify his hefty price tag, but is confident that the striker will prove to be a big success at Anfield.

"I think Christian Benteke still has a lot to prove at Liverpool but he was one of the best bits of early business in the summer," he told the Daily Mail. "As long as he gets good service at Liverpool he could be a very good signing for Brendan Rodgers."

Speaking ahead of Saturday evening's meeting between Manchester United and Liverpool, Keown also reserved some praise for another player who has been on the move this summer - former Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger.

"I think Schweinsteiger was magnificent for Germany against Scotland and could have a big impact," he added. "Bastian is already a top player and could turn out to be a fantastic signing for United.

"He has a real hallmark of quality about him and can run games from midfield. He may not be a long-term solution but he could be a top signing."

Keown spent nine years at Arsenal, while also representing England on 43 occasions up until 2002.
