Three players who could leave Manchester United at the start of 2023

Sports Mole identifies three players who could leave Manchester United during the January transfer window.

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag said last week that the club would be holding transfer meetings during the September international break with a view to further improving their squad.

"Always to use such breaks [is] useful," Ten Hag told MUTV following Thursday's 2-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League. "We have many meetings, we have to improve the structures in and around the club, we will do.

"We will also look to the window in January or next summer already but also to improve our way of playing by making plans and, of course, this coming period with every third day a game we have to get ready for that.

"The players: 90% is away, the others will train proper and for the rest we have to prepare very well and I hope everyone stays fit, return, healthy back and we have to go in and attack."

Man United allegedly want three players - a right-back, central midfielder and centre-forward - as part of the next phase of their rebuild, with Ten Hag potentially having £70m to spend in January.

There could also be departures during the winter market, and with that in mind, Sports Mole picks out three players who could leave Old Trafford at the start of 2023.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was strongly linked with a move away from Man United over the summer, with the 24-year-old seemingly not in the plans of Ten Hag moving forward.

Diogo Dalot is firmly the club's first-choice right-back, and it is believed that the Red Devils want to bring in competition for the Portugal international, which would likely lead to Wan-Bissaka leaving Old Trafford.

The former England Under-21s international has only played four minutes of football during the 2022-23 campaign, while he has not even been on the bench for three of the team's last four matches.

Wan-Bissaka's form at Crystal Palace led to Man United paying in the region of £50m to sign him in the summer of 2019, and he has made 127 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The defender has largely found it difficult to impress, though, and a return to Palace, potentially on loan, could be on the cards when the winter window opens for business.

Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek would have been delighted when Ten Hag was appointed as Man United's new head coach considering the relationship that he had with the Dutchman at Ajax.

The 25-year-old is still finding it difficult to break into the side, though, only playing 19 minutes of football this term, with a number of players ahead of him in the pecking order.

Van de Beek has only managed two goals and two assists in 53 appearances in all competitions for Man United, and a recent report claimed that Inter Milan are keen to sign him in January.

An injury has prevented the midfielder from playing more than he might have done this term, and he did not make the trip to Moldova last week for the team's Europa League clash with Sheriff Tiraspol.

It is very difficult to imagine the former Ajax youngster securing a regular role in the side, though, with Bruno Fernandes his direct competition when it comes to a spot in the XI.

Another loan move might be seen as beneficial for the midfielder, although a busy October could see Van de Beek play more minutes, providing that he can overcome his recent injury problem.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal of the season in Man United's 2-0 victory over Sheriff in the Europa League on Friday night, with the Portugal international netting from the penalty spot.

After the game, Ten Hag said that the 37-year-old, who is yet to register in six Premier League appearances this term, was "totally committed" to the club.

"He's totally committed to this project, totally committed to this team, totally involved, he also has connections that are coming around him and he is constructing connections so I'm happy with that," Ten Hag told reporters.

"We could expect this when you miss pre-season, he has to work really hard and invest to get the right fitness. He will score more goals. He's really close, when he gets more fitness he will score more."

Ronaldo - out of contract next June - pushed for a move away from the 20-time English champions over the summer, though, and it is not impossible to imagine him leaving at the start of 2023 if the right opportunity crops up.

A recent report claimed that a number of Man United players believe that their teammate still wants to leave, and the fact that he is not currently seen as a starter in the Premier League is an obvious problem.
