Maxwell confirms international retirement

Paris Saint-Germain defender Maxwell announces his retirement from international football after playing 10 times for Brazil.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Maxwell has announced his retirement from international football after making just 10 appearances for Brazil.

The 33-year-old, who was a member of the squad that made it to the last four of the World Cup in the summer, has also hinted that he could bring his professional career to an end in the near future.

"At 33 and with the level of the competition there is, the Selecao is over for me," Maxwell told France Bleu. "The experience of the World Cup in Brazil was fantastic at first, but the pressure and the economic environment around us played against us.

"I do not know if I will continue playing for long, I have not decided. We'll see in February and find out a little more. Maybe this is the end, maybe I will go on, it will depend on the desire of the club and maybe the offer that I have."

Maxwell's current contract with PSG expires at the end of this season.
