Leicester City saw their winning start to the new Premier League season come to an end on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur.

It was Spurs who took the lead on 80 minutes when substitute Dele Alli headed in Nacer Chadli's cross at the back post.

However, the home side earned themselves a share of the spoils just 90 seconds later thanks to Riyad Mahrez's spectacular strike past Hugo Lloris.

Was the result fair?

Tottenham may feel hard done by that they they did not come away with all three points, but credit must be given to Leicester for digging in and continuing their unbeaten start to the season. On another day Spurs could have earned a comfortable victory. However, their failure to turn their dominance into goals ultimately cost them.

Leicester's performance

The Foxes were forced to defend and hit Spurs on the break for much of the game, something which they did with plenty of discipline and focus. Their defence and midfield kept Tottenham at arm's length a lot of the time, frustrating their opponents with a robust display inside their own half. What is likely to please manager Claudio Ranieri the most is the strength of character that his players showed after going behind. Many of the fans inside the ground would have been forgiven for thinking that Dele Alli's goal was the winner, but Leicester came fighting back instantly and were rewarded with an equaliser. More hard-working performances like this and they will enjoy a successful campaign.

Tottenham's performance

Mauricio Pochettino will be wondering just how his side failed to leave the King Power Stadium with all three points following a dominant display against Leicester. The possession statistics tell you that the visitors saw way more of the ball than their opponents, yet they failed to convert this into goals. While they occasionally looked shaky at the back, plenty of positives can be taken from the dynamism that they showed in midfield. However, it was up front where they suffered. A lack of incision and the isolation of Harry Kane meant that they could not seize the game by the scruff of the neck. Judging by this performance they need someone up top to take some of the pressure off Kane.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Riyad Mahrez: Leicester's tricky winger had Spurs in knots all afternoon. His pace, skill and enthusiasm always gave the home side a chance of taking something from the game. He eventually came to their rescue eight minutes from time, scoring a wonderful goal to make sure that their efforts would not be in vain.

Biggest gaffe

Nacer Chadli had a glorious chance to give Spurs the lead at the start of the second half when he was played in down the right by Kyle Walker. The Belgian was more than capable of getting a shot on target despite the tight angle, but he instead smashed the ball high over the crossbar.

Referee performance

Martin Atkinson had a largely solid afternoon, though he was guilty of failing to award Leicester a penalty in the first half when Mahrez was chopped down in the box by Jan Vertonghen. That incident aside, the official allowed the game to flow at an exciting pace.

What next?

Leicester: The Foxes are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Bury in the second round of the League Cup.

Tottenham: Spurs continue their campaign on August 29 when they host Everton in the Premier League.
