Gylfi Sigurdsson: 'Swansea City will avoid relegation'

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson believes that former club Swansea City will avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has backed former club Swansea City to retain their Premier League status for another season.

Swansea are currently five points above the relegation zone, and the Icelander, who met up with several of his former teammates when his country faced Wales on Wednesday evening, is confident that Garry Monk will lead the club to safety.

The 24-year-old told the South Wales Evening Post: "I'm sure that Swansea will be fine. The way that they play football is going to get them out of there.

"As long as they score a few goals, they'll be fine. Garry was one of the leaders in the squad when I was there.

"I didn't think that he'd be first-team head coach so soon, but he's got the chance so hopefully he can make sure that they stay in the league and then build on that next season."

Sigurdsson scored seven goals in 19 appearances for Swansea during a loan spell in 2012.
