Preview: Tottenham Hotspur vs. Inter Milan - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's International Champions Cup clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan, including team news and predicted lineups.

Tottenham Hotspur's final warm-up game ahead of the start of competitive action will see them take on Italian giants Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The clash will bring to an end Tottenham's preparations for the 2019-20 campaign as they prepare to host Aston Villa in their Premier League opener on August 10.

Tottenham will enter this match off the back of winning the Audi Cup, having overcome Bayern Munich on penalties in Wednesday's final. Harry Kane scored the only goal of the game against Real Madrid in the semi-finals 24 hours earlier, before a shootout victory over Bayern saw them lift the trophy.

Mauricio Pochettino's side started their preparations for the new season with a 3-2 win over Juventus on July 21, before losing 2-1 against league rivals Manchester United on July 25. The team's pre-season has been a lot shorter than a number of other Premier League clubs, but their 2018-19 campaign did not end until June 1.

Spurs faced Liverpool in the Champions League final at the start of June, suffering a 2-0 loss to Jurgen Klopp's side. The club were criticised for not spending last summer or in January, but reaching the European Cup final in addition to securing another top-four finish has to be seen as a positive season.

The capital giants have already broken their transfer record this summer to sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon. The France international has impressed during pre-season, but the club's fans will be desperate to see a couple more new faces come through the door before the window closes on August 8.

Ryan Sessegnon has been strongly linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, but it has been reported that the teenager could stay at Fulham. Bruno Fernandes and Giovani Lo Celso, meanwhile, are also still being linked with switches before the deadline.

Tottenham's start to the new Premier League campaign is tough, considering that they will host a vibrant Villa on the opening weekend before travelling to champions Manchester City on August 17. Pochettino's side will then welcome Newcastle United and visit Arsenal in their two games ahead of the September international break.

Spurs will need Kane to have a big season if they are to challenge for trophies over the next 10 months, while it seems that 17-year-old Troy Parrott will be given opportunities to make his mark having been heavily involved during pre-season.

The capital outfit have had a tough summer in terms of the quality of their opponents, and this weekend's clash against Inter will be no different with Antonio Conte's side looking strong ahead of the new season.

Inter Milan

Conte has not yet taken charge of a competitive game for Inter, but the experienced head coach is seemingly on a collision course with the club when it comes to Man United forward Romelu Lukaku.

Inter have been strongly linked with a move for the Belgium international during the summer window, but Juventus now appear to be the favourites to sign the striker, which will not go down well with Conte, who has made no secret of his desire to bring the 26-year-old to San Siro.

The fact that Mauro Icardi is not in Conte's plans has left Inter extremely short in the final third of the field. That said, Lautaro Martinez is now back with his teammates after representing Argentina at the Copa America, and the striker could play his first pre-season minutes against Pochettino's side this weekend.

Radja Nainggolan is not expected to be included, though, with the midfielder also being strongly linked with a move away. Inter have until end start of September to complete transfer business, and the squad could have a very different look by the time that moment rolls around.

Inter started their preparations for the new season with a 2-1 win over Lugano on July 14 before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Man United in their first International Champions Cup fixture of the summer. The Milan giants then lost on penalties to Juventus after a 1-1 draw before beating Paris Saint-Germain on penalties after a 1-1 last weekend.

Conte has seemingly made it clear that Inter will be lining up in a 3-5-2 formation during the 2019-20 campaign, but it remains to be seen who fills the two spots in the final third. Edin Dzeko has also been linked with a move to I Nerazzurri as well as Lukaku, which would provide the team with a potent front two.

Inter will play their final pre-season game against Valencia next weekend before opening their Serie A campaign at home to Lecce on August 26. As a result, there is still a lot of time for Conte to work on things in the coming weeks, but it could yet be a frustrating end to the transfer window.

Team News

Tottenham will be without the services of Juan Foyth, who suffered an ankle injury in the clash with Bayern last time out. Serge Aurier is still unavailable, meanwhile, which leaves Kyle Walker-Peters as the club's only recognised right-back ahead of the start of competitive action.

Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama are all still unavailable, but Hugo Lloris overcame illness to feature in the Audi Cup, and the France international should start this weekend.

Ndombele could be joined by Harry Winks in the middle of the park, while Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Lucas Moura are expected to support Kane in the final third.

Danny Rose is also likely to continue at left-back, having been brought back into the fold.

As for Inter, Martinez could play his first pre-season minutes having joined up with the squad following his involvement in the Copa America.

Diego Godin, who represented Uruguay at the Copa America, could also be involved for his new club, but Icardi and Nainggolan are unlikely to be included.

Nicolo Barella is likely to continue in the middle of the park, although fellow new arrivals Valentino Lazaro and Matteo Politano are both struggling with thigh problems.

Tottenham possible starting lineup:
Lloris; Walker-Peters, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Winks, Ndombele; Eriksen, Alli, Lucas; Kane

Inter Milan possible starting lineup:
Handanovic; Skriniar, Godin, De Vrij; D'Ambrosio, Barella, Brozovic, Sensi, Dalbert; Martinez, Perisic

Head To Head

The two teams have met on six occasions over the last nine seasons in Europe, with both boasting three wins.

The pair actually locked horns during the group stages of last season's Champions League - Inter winning 2-1 on home soil back in September before Spurs recorded a 1-0 victory in the reverse game.

Arguably Gareth Bale's finest ever performance for Tottenham came in this particular fixture, meanwhile, with the Wales international scoring a hat-trick at San Siro back in 2010.

We say: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Inter Milan

Inter have been fairly tight defensively this summer but have struggled to find the back of the net. Tottenham will enter the match in good form, meanwhile, and we fancy Pochettino's side to record a narrow win.
