Preview: Cheltenham Town vs. Peterborough United - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Cheltenham Town and Peterborough United, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Peterborough United will attempt to claim a third consecutive victory when they travel to the Completely-Suzuki Stadium for Tuesday's clash with Cheltenham Town.

Meanwhile, the relegation-threatened hosts know that they need to claim all three points to have a chance of sending their survival fight to the final day of the season.

Cheltenham are on the brink of relegation after they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in Saturday's home clash against playoff-chasing Lincoln City.

Despite taking the lead through Liam Sercombe's penalty, the Robins were ultimately left empty-handed following goals from Joe Taylor and Freddie Draper.

Having lost five of their last six matches, Cheltenham are languishing in the relegation zone with five points separating them from Burton Albion and Cambridge United in 20th and 19th place respectively.

As a result of their perilous position, Cheltenham will be relegated if they fail to beat Peterborough at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium.

Darrell Clarke's side have struggled in recent matches in front of their own supporters, having lost each of their previous five home matches.

Peterborough are guaranteed to finish in at least fourth place after they claimed a 2-0 victory in Saturday's away clash with Bristol Rovers.

Posh took the lead through Joel Randall's 41st-minute effort, before Ricky-Jade Jones found the net to seal a second straight victory.

Peterborough, who have now won four of their last five matches, are sitting in fourth spot and six points adrift of Derby County in second position with two matches left to play against Cheltenham and third-placed Bolton Wanderers.

Although Peterborough still have a mathematical chance of automatic promotion, they would need to win their final two matches, hope Derby lose against Carlisle United and achieve a nine-goal swing in goal difference to overhaul the Rams and Bolton.

Despite needing a miracle, Posh will still be keen to continue their impressive away form on Tuesday, having won five of their previous six road trips in all competitions.

Team News

Cheltenham are expected to be without Lewis Freestone, Tom Pett, George Lloyd, Aidan Keena and Rob Street due to injury.

Clarke could be tempted to make a couple of changes, with Jack Shepherd and Joe Nuttall both in contention after coming off the bench to play half-hour against Lincoln.

Matty Taylor will be one of Cheltenham's main goal threats, having scored five times in 11 appearances since joining the club in the winter transfer window.

As for the visitors, they are unable to call upon midfielder Jeando Fuchs and winger Michael Olakigbe due to knee and foot injuries respectively.

Kwame Poku is also a doubt for Tuesday's contest after he was forced to miss the win over Bristol Rovers due to an ankle injury.

Although Peterborough are not mathematically out of the promotion race, Ferguson has indicated that he could make a number of changes in a bid to keep his players fresh for the playoffs, which could result in the likes of Romoney Crichlow, Ryan De Haviland and Jones being presented with starting opportunities.

Cheltenham Town possible starting lineup:
Southwood; Davies, Bradbury, Shepherd; Long, Kinsella, Sercombe, Bonds, Ferry; Taylor, Nuttall

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Steer; Dornelly, Knight, Crichlow, Burrows; Kyprianou, De Havilland; Jones, Randall, Mothersille; Clarke-Harris

We say: Cheltenham Town 1-2 Peterborough United

Although Ferguson could make alterations to his side, we still think that Peterborough will have enough quality required to claim a narrow win and end Cheltenham's three-year stay in the third tier.
