West Brom's best chance of the of the early stages came when James Morrison's header, going towards goal, hit teammate Shane Long and Swansea were able to clear.

The visitors deservedly broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when left-back Davies met Pablo Hernandez's cross and crashed a volley into the roof of the net.

Nicolas Anelka returned from compassionate leave to start for the home side and almost equalised when he shot just wide after surging forward in the 31st minute.
