Luis Enrique believes that Barcelona played well for the first 40 minutes of their Champions League tie against Manchester City, but defensive errors cost them dearly.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has bemoaned his side's 3-1 defeat at Manchester City, claiming that they lost their way after a defensive lapse saw the hosts draw level.

The visitors took the lead through Lionel Messi's 90th goal in the competition and dominated proceedings, but Sergi Roberto's mistake just before the break allowed Raheem Sterling to set up Ilkay Gundogan's simple finish.

From then on it was all City as Kevin De Bruyne curled a free kick past Marc-Andre ter Stegen to put the home side in the lead, before Gundogan fired a second to seal the win for Pep Guardiola's side.

Speaking about Barca's first-half period of domination, Enrique told BBC Sport after the game: "It was one of the best 40 minutes we have played on a stage like this against top-quality rivals.

"After the error for 1-1 we had a bad time. When you concede in that way it is normal that you go through a bad period. We hoped to continue to dominate but couldn't because of errors we made and pressure from the opponent also.

"We did not have as much possession and we made errors, we were not able to control the game in the same way. First 40 for us and 50 for them and the score reflects that."

Man City have closed the gap at the top of Group C, where Barcelona sit, to just two points with two matches left.
