Gareth Southgate explains Luke Shaw omission from England Under-21 squad

England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate reveals that he left Luke Shaw out of the squad for the European Championships for fitness reasons.

England Under-21s manager Gareth Southgate has said that he left Luke Shaw out of his squad for the European Championships this summer for fitness reasons.

The left-back, who is out of action with a facial problem, has been hampered by injury since moving to Old Trafford from Southampton last summer.

Southgate says that he felt it was best to leave Shaw out of the 27-man party after talking to United boss Louis van Gaal.

"I've spoken with Van Gaal," Southgate told BBC Sport. "Medically [Shaw] is not going to be fit. We were always going to lose someone to fitness and, hopefully, he will be the only one."

The Three Lions will head to the Czech Republic for the competition next month.
