Theo Walcott relishes fight for England jersey

Theo Walcott hails the strength in depth of the England team and admits that he is desperate to win back his place.

England winger Theo Walcott has said that he enjoys the intense competition for places as he continues to fight to get back into the national team after a knee injury.

The Arsenal player missed the World Cup after he damaged his cruciate ligaments, and he admits that he has to prove himself again to manager Roy Hodgson.

He told reporters: "Competition is always going to be there. I've been there from 17 and I've managed to get through it now and then. Competition is healthy.

"We want as a nation for all the players to be playing well. It's only going to spur you on and make you a better player. Bring it on, definitely.

"I think you need to prove yourself no matter what. I had a long-term injury but I got back from that and not many people would have worked hard like I did to get back to where I am."

Walcott is expected to be involved in the friendly against Italy tomorrow night.
