Roberto Martinez is keen for Everton to strengthen their squad during the summer to create competition for places.

New Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that the squad needs strengthening ahead of the new season.

The Spaniard was announced as the Toffees' new manager yesterday after leaving Wigan Athletic last week.

He insists that competition for places will be an important factor for his side.

"We need to bring in new signings," Martinez told BBC Sport.

"Players who will develop that competition and give different options on the playing field.

"We want to bring and extra dimension and competition for places."

Martinez also revealed this week that he would be seeking the advice of the man he replaced at Everton, David Moyes.
