Brendan Rodgers: 'Steven Gerrard likely to start despite shoulder injury'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers confirms that Steven Gerrard is likely to start the Merseyside derby despite a shoulder injury.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said that Steven Gerrard will feature in the Merseyside derby tomorrow, despite struggling with a shoulder injury.

The Reds captain had played every minute in the Premier League this season prior to being taken of as a substitute midway through the second half of last week's 6-0 win over Newcastle United.

The club confirmed recently that the England skipper is due to have surgery on a long-standing shoulder issue at the end of the season, but Rodgers has said that the midfielder will be playing when Everton visit Anfield.

"Steven has trained and should be fine [to start]," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

"He has had his shoulder strapped up and it is something that he can play on with. I've been ever so pleased with Steven this year, for me, to have him as captain like that has been brilliant."

Gerrard recently admitted that talks had begun over a new contract with the Reds.
