Manchester City team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Sheffield United

Sports Mole rounds up Manchester City's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with high-flying Sheffield United.

Manchester City will be looking to bounce back from their fifth league defeat of the season when they host high-flying Sheffield United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The champions surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday, leaving them still 14 points adrift of runaway leaders Liverpool.

The result means that Sunday's opponents have lost fewer games over the first half of the campaign than Pep Guardiola's side, with Sheffield United heading into the weekend in seventh place.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Man City's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the contest.

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 1 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Leroy Sane is making decent progress in his recovery from the serious knee injury he sustained in the Community Shield final, but he remains at least a month or so away from returning.

Aymeric Laporte

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: February 1 (vs. Tottenham Hotspur)

Another long-term absentee, and one whose presence has been sorely missed this season, Aymeric Laporte remains at least a month away from returning from a knee injury of his own.

Gabriel Jesus

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Illness
Possible return date: December 29 (vs. Sheffield United)

Gabriel Jesus missed the defeat at Wolves due to illness, and he will be assessed again ahead of this match with the quick turnaround in fixtures not helping his bid to recover in time.

David Silva

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Knock
Possible return date: December 29 (vs. Sheffield United)

David Silva will also undergo a late fitness test ahead of this match as he continues to nurse a leg injury which has kept him out since the Manchester derby at the start of the month.

John Stones

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Thigh
Possible return date: December 29 (vs. Sheffield United)

John Stones has also been absent since the Manchester derby and only has an outside chance of being ready for this one, with a return in the New Year considered more likely.

MAN CITY'S SUSPENSION LIST

Ederson

Return date: January 1 (vs. Everton)

Ederson's red card against Wolves means that he is suspended for this game, although he only has a one-match ban and so will return against Everton on New Year's Day.
