Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa have locked horns in a bid to secure the signature of Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to reports.
The 23-year-old recently signed a new deal at Old Trafford but could go out on loan in January in order to gain first-team experience.
According to the Derby Telegraph, Wigan could become Johnstone's next destination after Liverpool loanee Adam Bogdan returned to Merseyside with a season-ending injury.
However, Villa boss Steve Bruce is reportedly keen to bolster his goalkeeping options in the winter window, with Pierluigi Gollini, Jed Steer and Mark Bunn failing to impress.
Johnstone has previously been loaned to Walsall, Scunthorpe United, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End.
