Portsmouth's hopes of staying in the Championship look bleak as Harry Kane's first-half strike sees Millwall snatch victory at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth look set to be playing in the third tier of English football for the first time in 30 years next season after going down to Millwall at Fratton Park this evening.

The home side began the stronger with veteran Millwall keeper Maik Taylor making a double save from Chris Maguire and Luke Varney early on.

Millwall's main threat came from set pieces as Maguire spurned another chance for Pompey before the visitors took a surprise lead.

Andy Keogh did well before finding Harry Kane, who span off his marker before drilling low past Stephen Henderson to put the Lions one up at the interval.

Pompey continued to control in the second 45 and substitute Marko Futacs almost equalised for but his shot was tipped around the post by Taylor, who was keeping Millwall in the game.

Michael Appleton's men thought they'd found a leveller four minutes from time but Taylor again denied them by pushing Jason Pearce's header onto the woodwork.

Successive wins for the first time since November 1 for Millwall mean they have eased their relegation fears while Pompey are now nine points adrift of safety in 23rd.
