Wigan Athletic have announced that defender Ivan Ramis will be unavailable for selection for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.
The 28-year-old was expected to be sidelined for a lengthy period of time after he suffered the injury during the Latics' 1-1 draw with Fulham at the weekend and scans have shown that the Spaniard has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez told the club's official website: "Nothing can disguise the fact this is a massive blow because Ivan is a key member of the group but we are relieved that the injury is not a severe as we feared it could have been.
"The most important thing now is to think of Ivan's welfare, get the operation completed, and for him to begin his rehabilitation. Ivan is a very strong and positive character and he is determined to return to fitness as soon as he can."
Ramis has made 14 appearances and scored two goals for Wigan since moving to the club last year.
