Tottenham Hotspur open contract discussions with club captain Son Heung-min, according to a report.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly opened contract discussions with Son Heung-min.

The 31-year-old made the move to Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, and he has represented the North London club on 396 occasions, scoring 158 goals and registering 86 assists in the process.

Son has again been in impressive form for Tottenham this season, scoring 13 goals and registering six assists in 24 appearances in all competitions, but he only has little over one year left to run on his current contract.

According to Football Insider, Spurs have opened talks with the South Korea captain over a new deal, and the club are confident that an agreement will be finalised this summer.

Tottenham do have the option of activating another year on the forward's contract, which would take him until the summer of 2026, giving them space to agree a new deal if negotiations prove to be troublesome.

Saudi Pro League clubs are said to be keeping a close eye on the situation, but Son is allegedly happy in London and wants to continue representing Spurs for the foreseeable future.

The South Korean was appointed Tottenham captain for the 2023-24 campaign, and his form has been key to putting Ange Postecoglou's side in a position to challenge for a Champions League finish in the Premier League table.

Spurs are currently fifth in the division, five points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and six ahead of sixth-placed Manchester United, with a game in hand on both sides.

Postecoglou's side were 3-1 winners over Crystal Palace in the league last weekend, and they now face a trip to Villa Park to tackle Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Tottenham only have the league to focus on for the remainder of the season, and they will also take on Fulham and Luton Town in England's top flight before the end of the month.

Last month, following the 2-1 success over Brighton & Hove Albion, Postecoglou branded Son "world-class".

"It's fair to say that we are still a work in progress but we had a world-class player in Son [Heung-min], who makes the most difficult ball look simple to set up Brennan [Johnson]," said the manager.

"You look at his record in the Premier League, the toughest league in the world, his goal contributions irrespective of what his team's gone through have always been right up there.

"Even this year, before he left, I think he was probably the best attacking player in the competition, just my opinion obviously. Certainly he'd be up there. He's a world-class player."

Son was on the scoresheet in Tottenham's home success over Palace last weekend, with the forward registering his side's third in the 88th minute following goals from Timo Werner and Cristian Romero.
