Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has insisted that Lionel Messi will be remembered as the greatest player in the history of football when he eventually retires from the game.

The Argentine is already considered by many to be the best player on the planet, with a number of personal accolades to back up those views.

"He is the best in the world. If he is not already the best in history, he will end up being so," Vilanova told reporters.

"To all at Barca it would be a joy to have him end his career here. You will not see a player like Messi again."

Barca president Sandro Rosell suggested this week that Messi would be offrered a new contract at the Camp Nou, despite his current deal expiring in 2016.
