Leeds United are allegedly giving consideration to signing a former Premier League midfielder to resolve their crisis in that area of the pitch.

Leeds United are reportedly contemplating whether to enter the free-agent market to resolve their midfield issues.

Daniel Farke's side have responded to losing last season's Championship playoff final by accumulating 16 points from their opening nine fixtures of 2024-25.

With just one defeat and seven goals conceded coming during that period, the German can be satisfied with the defensive efforts of his squad.

However, the strength-in-depth of the first-team group at Elland Road will be put to the test over the winter months courtesy of a number of significant injuries.

Most notably, Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev have been ruled out until 2025 courtesy of knee injuries, Ampadu due back in January but Gruev facing a longer stint on the sidelines.

As a result, Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell are the current engine-room partnership with their being minimal experience in reserve.

Experienced Premier League midfielder on radar

Although Farke has previously spoken about being against acquiring free agents at this stage of the season, his hand may be forced given the upcoming hectic schedule.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, former Nottingham Forest midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate has emerged as an option.

The 34-year-old has remained available since his exit from the City Ground in the summer after a two-year stay in the East Midlands.

Kouyate barely featured for Forest after Nuno Espirito Santo's arrival at the back end of 2023, making just two substitute outings in the Premier League from the turn of the year.

Only 36 appearances were made for Forest over a two-year period, leaving the Senegal international with an effort to get up to speed should he sign for a new club in the coming weeks.

How many games do Leeds have left in 2024?

Despite another international break to come in November, Leeds still have 15 fixtures in the Championship during the remainder of 2024.

Already sitting five points adrift of leaders Sheffield United in the standings, Farke may have to go against his instinct and add extra bodies to his squad.
