The 22-year-old moved to the Sky Blues from Everton in July 2010.
"He's not a Middlesbrough player yet, a deal is never done until it's done," Boro boss Tony Mowbray told BBC Sport.
"People have to sanction the deal, but there are conversations going on and hopefully in the next 24 hours we'll have some positive news."
Jutkiewicz has scored 18 goals in 69 games for Coventry.
