Jonjo Shelvey handed five-game ban, six-figure fine for misconduct

Newcastle United's Jonjo Shelvey receives a five-match ban and six-figure fine after being found guilty of misconduct by the Football Association.

The Football Association has handed a five-match ban and a fine of £100,000 to Jonjo Shelvey after he was found guilty of misconduct.

The charge is in relation to an incident which occurred during Newcastle United's Championship fixture with Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 17.

Shelvey was initially charged "with using abusive and/or insulting words" towards Romain Saiss, while the FA has said that it was further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) was an "Aggravated Breach" as defined in Rule E3(2), as it "included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality".

The 24-year-old has also been ordered to attend an FA education course, but he has seven days to decide whether to appeal the verdict.

Shelvey will miss games with Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City and Brentford should the verdict stand.
