Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright says that Tottenham Hotspur "need to spend" this summer if they are to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright has said that Tottenham Hotspur "need to spend" in this summer's transfer window if they are to stand any chance of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

Tottenham are currently fourth in the Premier League table - 19 points behind Manchester City, who have already been confirmed as champions for the 2017-18 campaign.

Wright has said that Spurs have the tough task of signing the 'right players' this summer that will be able to "hit the ground running".

"They need to spend. But we saw Everton spend big, so you need to spend right too. That is going to be a massive thing; getting the right player," Wright told Sky Sports News.

"He has to come to England and they have to stave off City, Chelsea and Manchester Utd to get him, then he has to settle and hit the ground running because that is what Spurs and everybody behind City have to do now.

"Because of the way City have run away with it, Spurs and other teams have to hit the ground running to catch them. Players have to be ready to go as soon as they go into the team and that is going to cost a lot of money."

Tottenham shared the points with Brighton & Hove Albion in Tuesday's Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium.
