Former England hooker Phil Greening thinks that Rob Andrew needs to step down from the RFU due to the lack of help given to Martin Johnson during his tenure.

Ex-England hooker Phil Greening thinks that Rugby Football Union elite director Rob Andrew should step down from his role after the controversy surrounding the national side's failed World Cup bid.

The businessman has come under criticism since Martin Johnson's departure as head coach of England following the quarter-final exit of the elite tournament in New Zealand.

Following Johnson's resignation, reports emerged that the confidential World Cup files covering the off-field antics of the England team were leaked to the press.

"What is key is that Rob Andrew steps aside from his elite role and does the other four or five jobs he says he does and concentrates on that," Greening told talkSPORT. "We can then get in someone who is spot-on and knows about the management of elite rugby and sport and then some English coaches that can really develop underneath that.

"Martin Johnson, an inexperienced coach, had no support, no mentorship and no-one above him in the elite department that could see the things he was missing. He was too loyal and too close to the players and he missed things.

"People around him were not willing to point them out, they just wanted to keep their jobs. The coaches there have had their jobs for seven or eight years. It's a change we need and I am glad it's all coming out so we can rebuild."

Andrew stated last week that he was not considering leaving his position at the RFU.
