Andy Murray battled from a set down to grab a place in the third round of the French Open after overcoming Jarkko Nieminen 1-6 6-4 6-1 6-2 this afternoon.

The Scotsman failed to make an impact on the contest from the start of the clash due to a back problem that has marred the professional's game in recent months.

Nieminen took full advantage of the 25-year-old's distress by easing through the first set 6-1 while Murray tried to play through the pain barrier, despite receiving medical treatment midway through the opening set.

Murray continued to struggle and could barely throw the ball to serve but the Scotsman, who is desperate to win his first Grand Slam title, was determined to carry on.

While Nieminen looked set to dominate the second set after breaking Murray in the early stages of the clash, the world number four managed to draw level on 4-4 and complete a stunning recovery by going 5-4 up in the second set and clinching it 6-4.

Murray continued a miraculous comeback by going 2-1 up on sets by completely dominating the court, despite struggling to serve in the initial stages of the match.

Nieminen tried to cause an upset in the fourth set but the Scotsman was determined to get through to the next round of the tournament and continued to play as if the back injury were a distant memory.

A number of impressive forehand and backhand shots controlled the game for the Murray, who managed to complete a 6-2 to get through to the third round.
