Alan Irvine: 'Diego Costa's goal was offside'

West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine believes that Chelsea's first goal in their 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge, scored by Diego Costa, was offside.

West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine has claimed that Diego Costa was offside when scoring in Chelsea's 2-0 victory over his team at Stamford Bridge.

Costa notched his 11th goal of the season in the Premier League when he collected Oscar's cross and fired the ball past Ben Foster, and from that point in the game the Blues controlled the contest.

Irvine feels that his team were hard done by in their defeat, although the Scot also admitted that he was frustrated by his side's defending for Eden Hazard's goal.

He told BBC Sport: "Obviously this is a really difficult place to come. They're a top team. We were looking to get off to a good start and obviously the first goal after 11 minutes made it hard.

"We certainly had to have a shape about us and have discipline, but to lose those first couple of goals was obviously against what we were trying to do.

"We had a game plan which was made more difficult by the first goal which I think was offside. But the second one I was disappointed about - we pride ourselves on being organised at set-pieces and we weren't as organised as we should have been."

West Brom are 13th in the Premier League with 13 points from their 12 matches so far this season.
