Former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi is sentenced to five years and four months in jail after being found guilty of sporting fraud.

The former general manager of Juventus has been jailed for five years and four months after being found guilty of sporting fraud.

Luciano Moggi, 74, has already been banned from football for life for his involvement in the 2006 'Calciopoli' scandal.

In what was the biggest corruption case in Italian soccer, Juventus were stripped of their 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles and relegated to Serie B by a sports court.

"I absolutely did not expect this sentence," said Maurilio Prioreschi, one of Moggi's lawyers. "We have only lost the first round, we will try to turn the situation around in appeal.

"We will do everything until we have justice. Moggi is devastated, he does not understand how he has been given this sentence.

"We now have 90 days to know the grounds for the decision and prepare our defence for the appeal."

Due to the intricacies of the Italian justice system it is unlikely that Moggi will spend much, if any, time in jail as there are many levels of appeal available to him.

The Turin club have since returned to Italy's top flight and are currently fourth, two points adrift of joint leaders Udinese and Lazio.
